The Moscow City Court is considering a criminal case of treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code) against 21-year-old student Gleb Verdiyan. The next meeting was supposed to take place today, but the accused was not brought to court, a Mediazona correspondent reports.
Verdiyan's lawyer, who was near the courtroom, refused to give his name to the correspondent. He also did not say when the next meeting would take place, whether the debate was planned soon — the defender only confirmed that he was considering the case in court.
None of Verdiyan's relatives or acquaintances came to the meeting. The case is considered by a panel of three judges chaired by Judge Vitaly Belitsky. According to Mediazona, the case went to court on July 12, the first hearing was held on August 1.
Gleb Verdiyan is the youngest defendant under the article on treason, whose persecution is known to journalists. Initially, in October 2022, he was arrested for 10 days under the article on petty hooliganism (part 2 of article 20.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses). As the BBC Russian Service wrote, then he was detained under the pretext that he «violated public order» at a bus stop near the airport. When the term of administrative arrest expired, he was accused of treason and sent to a pre-trial detention center.
What exactly Verdiyan is accused of is not known, the materials of the treason cases are classified. According to the BBC Russian Service, he is charged with preparing for the state name (part 1 of Article 30, Article 275 of the Criminal Code).
Verdiyan was a second-year student at the Faculty of Economics of the Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (AGASU ). Prior to that, he graduated from college at the same university and received a diploma in architecture.
