Manhart Alpina 2002 tii: delicious “pork cheeks” and improved technical filling

The German studio Manhart Performance continues to develop its recently launched classic car tuning program, this time specialists from Wuppertal have upgraded the BMW coupe 2002 tii, released back in 1973 and modified by Alpina.

The once independent Alpina brand will soon come under the control of the BMW Group, and its past models are now themselves becoming targets for tuning. At one time, Alpina improved the initial sports version of the 2002 tii two-door BMW 02 Series of the E10 generation; Manhart specialists retained Alpina parts in it and added their own — the result was a kind of double tuning.

The BMW 2002 tii of later years was equipped with a 2.0-liter M10 gasoline engine with Kugelfischer mechanical injection; its stock output was 130 hp. and 178 Nm, now — 200 hp. and 215 Nm, which is very good for a classic sports car weighing about a ton. At the intake, this engine now has a K&N filter, a throttle valve and a manifold from Alpina, and at the exhaust there is a new manifold from Manhart with a very “tasty” exhaust sound. The 5-speed manual transmission and disc brakes are borrowed from the later E21 generation BMW 323i.

The body has been completely restored; additional rigidity is given by the Alpina Clubsport tubular frame behind the front seats (the rear sofa is preserved) and the Wiechers strut between the front suspension struts. The struts themselves are new — Raab Classics from KW, they are combined with a modified Alpina suspension and a widened wheel track, which required wheel arch extensions, nicknamed «pork cheeks». The classic 16-inch Alpina compound wheels are shod with modern Falken tires measuring 215/40 R 16 at the front and 225/40 R 16 at the rear. The body is painted in BMW Agave Green and decorated with Alpina's signature arrow-shaped decals.

The interior has also been completely restored; vintage Scheel sports chairs have received new combined upholstery in classic blue-green colors. The three-spoke steering wheel, gear lever and floor mats bear Alpina logos. There is no audio system, all the instruments are original, the windows are on “oars”, the spirit of the 60s is not spoiled here, this car doesn’t even have a right rear view mirror, but taking into account the aquarium visibility there should be no problems with maneuvering.

The cost of the Manhart Alpina 2002 tii shown in the photographs is 149,000 euros. Previously, as part of the Manhart Classic Cars program, modified Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V and BMW M3 of the E30 generation were presented.
