Chinese electric vehicle company Nio continues its rapid update of its lineup: the second-generation EC6 mid-size crossover has been introduced, it looks almost exactly the same as larger EC7, but has a slightly more modest technical filling.

The first generation Nio EC6 entered the market in the fall of 2020, when Nio was on the verge of financial collapse. The company is now doing better, although it is still making losses, but they are mainly due to the rapid updating of the model line, thanks to which Nio's sales are growing, which instills confidence in investors. In the first three quarters of this year, Nio sold 94,352 electric vehicles in China, which is 32% more than in January-August 2022. In addition, Nio expects rapid sales growth in Europe, for which it has developed the recently introduced ET5 Touring station wagon.

The new EC6 is Nio's second generation of electric vehicles, which is based on the modular NT2 platform with double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. At the end of last year, the coupe-shaped crossover Nio EC7, built on this platform, made its debut with a standard air suspension, and the younger EC6 has conventional springs and adaptive shock absorbers instead of air struts. The bumps on the roof and front fenders, which were not present on the first generation EC6, are artificial vision organs (cameras and lidar) necessary for the operation of electronic driver assistants and autopilot.

The “second” Nio EC6 is longer, wider and noticeably lower than its predecessor, while in all key dimensions it is inferior to the more status EC7. Overall length of the second generation Nio EC6 is 4849 mm, width — 1995 mm, height — 1697 mm, wheelbase — 2915 mm. Standard wheels are 20-inch. In terms of design, the “second” EC6 and EC7 are confusingly similar: you can distinguish one from the other from the rear only by the nameplates, from the front it’s a little simpler: the upper sections of the headlights on the EC6 have jumpers (the EC7 doesn’t have them), and there is no black plastic section above the air intake (EC7 has it). The aerodynamic drag coefficient cx of the Nio EC6 is slightly worse than that of the EC7 — 0.24 versus 0.23, and both crossovers have a retractable spoiler in the trunk lid.

The dual-motor power plant (one motor per axle) of the Nio EC6 is less powerful than the EC7, but it is unlikely that any buyers will complain about a lack of traction: the front electric motor produces 150 kW (204 hp) and 280 Nm, the rear — 210 kW (286 hp) and 420 Nm, maximum combined output — 360 kW (490 hp) and 700 Nm. The new EC6 reaches the first “hundred” in 4.4 seconds, the maximum speed is limited to 200 km/h. The battery capacity is 75 or 100 kWh, the range on one charge is 495 and 630 km according to the CLTC cycle, respectively. The permissible weight of the towed trailer is 1260 kg.

The interior design of the EC6 is the same as that of the EC7, the difference comes down to minor details: for example, the front seats of the EC6 are simpler, but still equipped with a large number of adjustments, fans and massagers, and the passenger seat also has a retractable footrest. The instrument screen is 10.2 inches, the multimedia screen is 12.8 inches, and above the multimedia screen there is a retractable head of the proprietary Nomi robot assistant. The standard 1000-watt audio system has 23 speakers. Trunk volume — 594 l, with the backrests folded — 1402 l.

New Nio The EC6 is already available for order in China and it is, of course, cheaper than the EC7: the basic version of the EC6 with a 75 kWh battery costs from 358,000 yuan (4.73 million rubles at current exchange rates), with a 100 kW battery h — from 416,000 yuan (5.49 million rubles). For comparison, let's say that Nio EC7 now costs in China from 458,000 yuan (6.05 million rubles).
