Poland will ban entry into the country for cars with Russian license plates from September 17, said the head of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mariusz Kaminski.
The restrictions apply to cars with a capacity of up to ten people, including cars and racing cars registered in Russia.
“Vehicles registered in Russia and bearing Russian plates that appear at Polish border crossings will, from Sunday, be returned back to the non-EU country from which they came, be it Russia or another country. Such actions will be carried out even if the driver of the car is not a citizen of Russia,” the message says.
Kaminsky stressed that “not a single Russian car will enter Poland,” regardless of whether whether it is used for personal or commercial purposes.
Previously, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania introduced a ban on crossing the border in cars with Russian license plates, but the countries interpret the explanation of the European Commission on September 8 differently. For example, the Finnish authorities reported that the entry ban will not affect EU citizens and their relatives, as well as diplomatic mission employees and those entering Finland for humanitarian reasons. At the same time, cars with Russian license plates that are already in Finland will have to leave the country within six months, that is, until March 16, 2024.
The Latvian Tax Service also said that it will not confiscate cars with Russian license plates from Russians if the cars are already in the country. Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Jovita Neliupsiene said that upon entering Lithuania, cars registered in Russia will be confiscated at customs, regardless of the citizenship of the person driving.
