
MOSCOW, September 19 Russian military in contact with the Armenian and Azerbaijani sides, contacts at the highest level are also possible, said press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.
“Our military, first of all, and also through other channels, we are in contact with both the Armenian side and the Azerbaijani side parties,» Peskov told reporters.
“First of all, contacts are now being carried out through our military, through other departments. Communication is also being coordinated at a higher level. As final agreements are reached, we will immediately inform you, including about possible contacts at the highest level level,” Peskov answered reporters when asked whether contacts with Baku and Yerevan are planned in the coming hours.
At the same time, Peskov noted that Putin and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan were not in contact after the letter sent by the latter. “Indeed, there was a detailed letter outlining the point of view of the Armenian side on what was happening. At that time, … work was actually taking place to resume the flow of humanitarian aid to Karabakh. And to our satisfaction, as of yesterday, this work was crowned with success. The first shipment in two directions through Agdam and the Lachin road went, but unfortunately this did not save us from the resumption of hostilities. There have been no other contacts since then,» Peskov said.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday that Baku began «anti-terrorist measures» in Karabakh «to restore the constitutional order. Military facilities of Armenia were named as the targets of the Azerbaijani army in the region; it was stated that Baku was using high-precision weapons for this purpose. Yerevan called what was happening aggression and stated that there were no Armenian units in Karabakh. Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan chaired a meeting of the Security Council of the republic.
Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said that information in the media that Azerbaijan allegedly warned Russian peacekeepers in advance about the “operation” in Nagorno-Karabakh does not correspond to reality: on in fact, information about the start of the “operation” was communicated several minutes before the start of hostilities.
