SIMFEROPOL, September 22 The working group has completed preparations a draft request to the Constitutional Court of Russia on compliance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the repeal of the USSR law of April 26, 1954 on the transfer of Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR, said Sergei Trofimov, co-chairman of the special working group, head of the Crimean Parliament Committee on Legislation.
The working group was created on behalf of the head of the Crimean parliament Vladimir Konstantinov.
«The work on preparing the request has been completed. We are now only finalizing the final wording, which is what the Constitutional Court is directly asking for, since every word has an important and significant meaning. But in general, the legal argumentation is fully ready,» Trofimov said .
According to him, the request is planned to be accepted at one of the next plenary sessions of the autumn session of the Crimean parliament, and then sent to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation.
Trofimov emphasized that the peninsula was transferred to Ukraine in 1954 illegally, with gross violations of three constitutions — the USSR, the RSFSR and the Ukrainian SSR, therefore the abolition of this decision will restore historical justice.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following the results of a referendum after the coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol were in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea its temporarily occupied territory, and many Western countries support Kyiv on this issue. For its part, the Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the residents of Crimea voted for reunification with Russia democratically, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Crimea issue is “finally closed.”
