MOSCOW, September 28 The decisions of the Rome Statute are difficult fit into the head, said the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Armenia’s proposals for an agreement with Russia to resolve the situation with Yerevan’s ratification of the Rome Statute.
It was previously reported that Armenia invited Russia to sign a bilateral agreement to legally resolve the situation related to Yerevan’s ratification of the Rome Statute.
““Armenia knows very well that we are not parties (to the Rome Statute), and Armenia is well aware of the absolutely difficult decision taken on the basis of this statute. We know that this is very well known in Yerevan,” he said Peskov to journalists.
The Kremlin also hopes, Peskov clarified, that Armenia’s recognition of the Rome Statute will not negatively affect relations between Moscow and Yerevan.
“Armenia is a sovereign state, and we, of course, hope that such decisions «will not negatively affect our bilateral relations, because here we are talking about a statute that we do not recognize, we are not parties to it. But these decisions (adopted within the framework of the Rome Statute — ed.) are extremely hostile for us,» he said.
The pre-trial chamber of the International Criminal Court (ICC), whose jurisdiction Moscow does not recognize, issued an arrest warrant in March for Russian President Vladimir Putin and children's ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova.
Peskov noted that Armenia’s plans to ratify the Rome Statute are “not something we welcome.”
