The new HONOR 90 smartphone has appeared in Russian stores — a continuation of the famous “numbered” line of devices, so beloved by fans of the brand. The new product turned out to be not just a mid-level smartphone, but a real pre-flagship gadget with an interesting design and a number of unique features. We'll find out how good the 90th is in the review.
Design
Externally, HONOR 90 looks like an exquisite smartphone. The company does not hide the fact that it was inspired by jewelry when creating. Moreover, the designers have made different designs for the back panel for different colors — from gloss black to intricate patterns in blue. We tested a green HONOR 90 with frosted glass. This option fits nicely in the hand and is extremely practical — fingerprints and stains do not “stick” to it.
The elegance of the forms is supported by the low weight of the device — with a fairly large screen and the use of tempered glass in the panels, the smartphone weighs only 183 grams.
HONOR 90 stands out from its competitors in two more ways. Firstly, these are camera rings — it would seem that what could be new in such a familiar design technique? Maybe — after all, the creators tried to create the visual effect of a concave lens; the glass really looks unusual. Secondly, the screen here has beveled edges, their radius is small, but swiping is much more convenient than in the case of a flat surface.
Display
In HONOR 90 an AMOLED matrix (matrix based on organic light-emitting diodes) with a diagonal of 6.7 inches, a resolution of 2644 x 1200 pixels and hardware support for HDR10+ content (wide dynamic range) is used. The minimum thickness of the frame around the screen catches your eye; just a couple of years ago, even super-expensive smartphones could not boast of this.
The display supports refresh modes of 60, 90, 120 Hz and automatic adjustment. If you enable forced 120 Hz, the smartphone will honestly maintain the maximum frame rate.
Another point is related to screen resolution. The manufacturer has given the user the opportunity to choose between maximum native and reduced resolution; in the latter case, the energy efficiency of the system increases.
The matrix is completely devoid of flicker that is unpleasant to the eyes; here, for the first time in smartphones, high-frequency PWM at 3840 Hz is used, certification is declared that promises safety for vision. » media-type=»photo» data-crop-ratio=»0.562793121417405″ data-crop-width=»600″ data-crop-height=»338″ data-source-sid=»rian_photo» class=»lazyload» width =»1920″ height=»1081″ decoding=»async» />
Productivity and communications
The HONOR 90 uses the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition processor (Snapdragon 7 Gen 1). The prefix in the name means that this is a custom version, which is overclocked by Qualcomm. Eight processor cores are made using a 4nm process technology, and the Adreno 644 GPU (graphics processor) is also responsible for video processing.
In the popular AnTuTu benchmark, the smartphone scored more than 600 thousand points — the result is not a flagship, but a strong average. In everyday tasks, the HONOR 90 is perceived as a very fast device, there is no hint of thoughtfulness or lag. This is due to the proprietary MagicOS 7.1 shell, based on Android 13. It offers original solutions, such as large folders or advanced capabilities for working with widgets. For many applications, a multi-window operating mode with flexible window size adjustment is provided. Smart assistant YoYo (YoYo) can now recognize text in a picture. Of course, HONOR 90 fully works with services and programs from Google, but an alternative branded application store is also available.
In games, the smartphone demonstrates excellent performance — some of the advanced titles can run at maximum settings. Thus, PUBG allows you to set an almost top-end graphics configuration, and the “battles” themselves take place without slowdowns or lags.
Two memory options are available for the Russian market — 8/256 and 12/512 GB. It’s interesting that none of the competitors offers the “minimum” of 256 GB, and in this parameter the 90th compares favorably with them. In addition, the smartphone supports HONOR RAM Turbo memory expansion technology (SEM Turbo), which allows you to get up to 7 GB from the drive.
The smartphone has a full range of modern interfaces and communications — from Wi-Fi 6 to Bluetooth 5.2 with support for LE (low power consumption mode) and the aptX HD audio codec (APitiix HD). The NFC chip (contactless data transfer chip), beloved by Russians, has not been forgotten, with which a smartphone can be used to make contactless payments. There was room in the expansion slot for two nanoSIMs.
Camera
The HONOR 90 has a camera unit of three sensors. The main one is an impressive 200-megapixel sensor based on the Samsung ISOCELL HP3 sensor. The camera has a tenacious PDAF autofocus (phase autofocus). The 12-megapixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens also has autofocus, which significantly expands its functionality — thanks to this, for example, you can take high-quality macro photographs. The third sensor is a 2-megapixel sensor for blurring the background in portrait mode. The 50 MP front camera, interestingly, can record video in 4K resolution.
By default, the main camera of the smartphone takes pictures at a resolution of 12 megapixels — the detail is good, the colors are very pleasant and realistic. There is enough sharpness over the entire area of the frame, but the algorithms could have worked more softly. In pro mode we find a 200 megapixel shooting option. Processing such a photo takes a few seconds. The pictures look more natural, the detail also increases, but, of course, not tenfold. Thanks to the enormous resolution of the sensor, there is virtually no loss of quality with a 2x digital zoom.
The “Shirik”, despite its modest resolution, produces beautiful images with a high level of detail. The colors look beautiful and match the main camera's color grading.
Evening and night Night shooting mode becomes relevant. Photos taken with the main camera are a little sharper, and light sources are processed more carefully. Interestingly, the sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens remains a completely working tool; it’s nice to look at the pictures on a smartphone screen.
HONOR 90 can record videos in maximum quality 4K at 30 frames per second. There are also flagship features, such as switching between lenses while shooting or recording HDR video.
Sound, safety and autonomy
The new product has a mono speaker, that is, sound the circuit has remained unchanged since the HONOR 70. The sound quality of the multimedia speaker is high, there are enough low and high frequencies, you can even hear the middle.
HONOR 90 received two unlocking methods based on biometrics — by face and using an under-screen fingerprint scanner. The first is based on the work of the front camera. The second is a reliable and time-tested optical sensor with good sensitivity; it detects the owner’s finger the first time.
The thin body of the smartphone hides a 5000 mAh battery — it is commendable that the manufacturer did not sacrifice the battery for the sake of elegance. The battery life of the HONOR 90 is more than enough for a working day: I returned the smartphone to charge every evening with 30-40% of its capacity remaining. Wired charging with a power of 66 W can fully charge the device in about 50 minutes, and 65% of the capacity is “filled” in the first half hour.
Total
HONOR 90 looks like a worthy successor to the extremely popular » seventies» — the company carefully approached the issue of updating, scrupulously improving almost all characteristics. The price tag chosen for the HONOR 90 also adds to the attractiveness of the smartphone: for the 8/256 GB version they will ask for 39,990 rubles, the top version 12/512 GB is priced at 44,990 rubles.
