Russia has improved the most important element of radio technology

MOSCOW, September 28. Omsk State Technical University scientists proposed changes to the design of the generator for radio communications. According to the authors, the proposed transformations will increase the service life and period of error-free operation of the designed devices by four times. The results are presented in the Omsk Scientific Bulletin.
The stability of the frequency of radio signals, according to experts, is influenced by temperature, vibration and many other environmental factors. The distortion they introduce can make communication between the receiver and transmitter impossible. This problem is especially relevant for navigation and radar systems.

For the correct operation of any modern radio equipment, reference frequency generators are needed that create a carrier signal that is weakly susceptible to destabilizing factors. By purposefully making controlled changes to the parameters of the carrier signal, the transmitter thereby encodes the necessary information, scientists explained.

Such generators, as experts noted, are produced throughout the world by a small number of scientific and technical centers, and domestic work in this area in the early 1990s turned out to be virtually frozen for a long time.
Researchers from Omsk State Technical University (OmSTU) proposed a way to improve the best Russian reference frequency generator, created at the Omsk Research Institute of Instrument Engineering, through the use of new materials and a new design.

“Designing a reference frequency source is a complex task that requires combining a number of difficult-to-combine parameters in one device and balancing them for different applications. Thanks to analysis on three-dimensional models, the possibility of simultaneously achieving high long-term frequency stability and short time to establish the signal frequency was shown,” said Igor Khomenko, associate professor of the department of radio engineering devices and diagnostic systems of Omsk State Technical University.

As the researcher emphasized, when implementing the proposed changes in design, the service life and period of error-free operation of an improved generator can increase fourfold.

Also, the authors of the development were able to reduce long-term frequency instability by almost four times and maintain the time the generator reaches the operating frequency at the level of 10–15 seconds, which is extremely important for use in various situations.

It is extremely important that the future generator can be easily integrated into most of the equipment already existing on the market, the university reported.
«Working with industry, we realized that devices that have no analogues are difficult to integrate into established production. Our proposals do not lead to changes in external overall dimensions and seating compared to manufactured generators. Future development will be able to serve as a standard element base for the most common household appliances, but with improved characteristics,” noted Khomenko.

In the future, the research team intends to complicate the functioning algorithms of reference frequency generators by working on the creation of a miniature thermostated generator with computer control.
Omsk State Technical University is a participant in the Priority-2030 state support program for Russian universities. The research was carried out within the framework of the strategic project «Ultra-wideband microwave microelectronics».
