MOSCOW, October 2 The launch of Russia's first high-speed railway (HSR) Moscow — St. Petersburg is planned until 2030, the General Director of Russian Railways said in an interview Oleg Belozerov.

"Let’s say this: we plan that the high-speed railway will be introduced by 2030. We will strive to reduce the time frame as much as possible, since this improves the financial performance of the project,” he said.

A trip on the high-speed railway will cost a little more than on the Sapsan, the head of Russian Railways clarified. He added that most of the other planned high-speed rail lines must be built before 2043.

High-speed rail is a dedicated, electrified, double-track rail line that operates trains at speeds between 200 and 400 kilometers per hour. Now in Russia there are no such roads. The pilot project should be a high-speed railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg. It will reduce travel time between cities to two hours and 15 minutes from the current four hours. The cost of construction is estimated at 1.7 trillion rubles.

On August 17, 2023, Belozerov, at the opening of traffic on MCD-3, asked Vladimir Putin to support the construction of the Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed railway. The President supported the pilot project, and also outlined several more directions for future expressways: from Moscow to Kazan and the Ural regions, to Adler and even to Minsk.
