BAKU, October 2 The extension of the International Space Station (ISS) after 2028 will be determined by its technical condition, said Roscosmos General Director Yuri Borisov.
“We have indeed extended our participation in the international ISS project until 2028. Further participation will be determined by the technical condition of this station,” Borisov said on Monday at a session of heads of space agencies at the International Astronautical Congress in Baku.
According to him, in the event of a decision to terminate the project, the participating countries will carry out the correct removal of the station from orbit.
“Unfortunately, this wonderful project will someday end, the station will cease to exist, and I confirm that our colleagues and I will take all necessary efforts to correctly remove it from orbit,” Borisov noted.
On April twenty-fifth, Roscosmos informed its partners about the extension of Russia’s participation in the ISS project until 2028. And on June 30, Borisov stated that the ISS will cease to exist in its current form after 2030.
According to the head of Roscosmos, the exit from the ISS project should be synchronized with the start of the deployment of the new Russian Orbital Station (ROS). The first stage of the formation of the ROS is scheduled for 2027-2030, construction is planned to be completed in 2032.
On April 10, First Deputy General Director of Roscosmos Andrei Elchaninov reported that the construction of the ROS is tentatively estimated at more than 600 billion rubles. According to him, the exact amount will become known based on the results of preparing the preliminary design.
