MOSCOW, Oct. 3 Former head of the Council Minister of the USSR Nikolai Ryzhkov explained that he resigned from the Federation Council due to his age: “I looked at my passport and said “enough.”
Previously, the 94-year-old politician resigned early as a senator from the Belgorod region.
“I looked at his passport and said “that’s enough,” Ryzhkov said.
He noted that sooner or later everything will come to an end.
Ryzhkov also said that he had received an offer from Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko to become her adviser on a voluntary basis. “If the proposal is in force, I will be interested in working in the Federation Council,” said the politician.
Ryzhkov was the oldest senator, he was 94 years old. The former chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR represented the government of the Belgorod region in the Federation Council for 20 years — since 2003.
Nikolai Ivanovich was born on September 28, 1929 in the Donetsk region, USSR. Graduated from the Ural Polytechnic Institute named after. CM. Kirova (mechanical engineer). Worked in production. Then he continued his career along the party line.
From 1985 to 1991, he served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. In 1986, he headed the headquarters for eliminating the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, in 1988 he coordinated the same work after the earthquake in the city of Spitak in Armenia.
In 1991, Ryzhkov participated in the first presidential elections in Russia, in which he lost to Boris Yeltsin. He was elected as a deputy of the State Duma of the II and III convocations.
Awarded two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, Orders of Merit for the Fatherland, I and IV degrees, the October Revolution, the Patriotic War, I degree, Honor, and medals. Laureate of USSR State Prizes in 1969 and 1979.
