The scientist assessed the risk of magnetic storms over the weekend

MOSCOW, Oct. 14Reports about strong magnetic storms on October 14-15 are unreliable; in September there was a powerful burst on the Sun, after which the star needs to accumulate energy, so the Earth’s magnetosphere will be calm for the next couple of weeks, said the head of the solar astronomy laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IKI) and the Institute of Solar Sciences. Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) RAS Sergey Bogachev.
Previously, some Internet resources reported that a very strong magnetic storm awaits the Earth this coming weekend.

“Now there is a temporary decline in activity on the Sun. In simple words, during the September activity the star spent a lot of energy, and now it needs time to recover. Accordingly, from the beginning of October we have a very calm situation on the Sun, which is forecast to last at least another 1-2 weeks, perhaps until the end of the month,” Bogachev said.

He explained that the Sun experiences a peak of activity approximately every 11 years. The last time such an event occurred was in 2012, the next one should occur in 2024. As the Sun approaches peak activity, it experiences more frequent bursts of activity.
In 2023, there were two such bursts: in the spring, when the largest magnetic storms in several years occurred, as well as auroras, visible including in the Moscow region, and another in September.
