UN, Oct 18 China will support Russian amendments to the Brazilian project resolution on the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip, Chinese Permanent Representative Zhang Jun told reporters.
“We will support,” said Zhang Jun.
Brazil has prepared a draft resolution that condemns the «Hamas terrorist attack» on October 7. The document calls for the cancellation of the Israeli order for Gazans and UN representatives to move from the north to the south of the strip. The draft calls for the immediate release of the hostages without preconditions. The document does not contain a separate call for a ceasefire, but the draft calls for the announcement of humanitarian pauses to ensure humanitarian access for UN employees and other humanitarian organizations. In addition, the draft resolution calls on all parties to fully comply with their obligations under humanitarian law, including ensuring the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. The parties call for maximum restraint.
Russia proposed making two amendments to the Brazilian draft. Moscow wanted to add a paragraph to the text in which the Security Council would unequivocally condemn indiscriminate attacks on civilians, as well as civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, in particular the “monstrous attack on the Al-Ahly hospital.” The amendment also proposed condemning on behalf of the Security Council the imposition of a blockade on the Gaza Strip.
The Second Amendment proposed adding a separate clause to the Brazilian text: “The Security Council calls for an immediate, lasting and fully observed ceasefire.”
