MOSCOW, 19 Oct. Two cannons from the early 17th century were found on Wednesday by Russian scientists during excavations in the city of Orel. This was stated by Oleg Radyush, a researcher at the archeology department of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, during the press conference “Big wall: Russian archaeologists are on the verge of discoveries” at the Rossiya Segodnya news agency.
According to the expert, on October 18, researchers found one intact cannon, one broken and cannonballs of different calibers.
«»A gun approximately 1 meter 86 centimeters long, with a diameter of about 37 millimeters. These are small small-caliber guns. According to the definition of our well-known specialist Alexei Lobin, they belong to the valkoney type. These are small field guns, cast iron, decorated with a barrel ornament in the form of a snake's head. The second is «This is an unornamented fragment. Apparently, (the gun) was torn apart, since the barrel cutout was not centered. Most likely, the barrel ruptured,» Radyush explained.
