Future competitor to Ford Maverick: Toyota has prepared a prototype of a new small pickup truck

The concept truck called EPU received a monocoque body, as well as a fully electric “filling”.

Japanese manufacturers are now continuing to prepare for the Japan Mobility Show: at this exhibition they will have the opportunity to demonstrate their latest developments in the fields of technology and automotive design. Toyota also gave an idea of its stand: previously the company published teasers of the FT-3e crossover and the FT-Se sports car, and also showed the Kayoibako compact electric van and the Toyota IMV 0 truck (this show car was first shown to the general public at the end of December last year). Now Toyota has shown a couple more new products, the “live” premiere of which will take place at an exhibition in Tokyo towards the end of this week.

Toyota EPU Concept

We are talking about the concept of a fully electric version of the Toyota Land Cruiser, as well as a show car, which is a pickup truck called EPU (the company has not yet explained how this name stands for). The manufacturer classifies the new concept as a segment of mid-size pickup trucks, although, judging by the dimensions, according to the American specification, the new product belongs to the segment of compact trucks.

According to official data, the Toyota EPU is 5070 mm long, 1910 mm wide and 1710 mm high; distance between axles – 3350 mm. For comparison, the compact Ford Maverick pickup truck introduced in 2021 has dimensions of 5072 x 1844 x 1744 mm and a wheelbase of 3075 mm. Note that the Maverick is equipped with either a traditional internal combustion engine or a hybrid power plant, while the EPU has an all-electric “filling”. True, there are no details about it yet.

It is known that Toyota EPU got a monocoque body, a curved hood, head optics in the form of a single element running across the entire width of the front part, and taillights designed in a similar way. The concept was also equipped with a large air intake in the front bumper, an unpainted plastic body kit around the perimeter of the body, traditional exterior mirrors, recessed door handles, a black roof with a spoiler with an integrated brake light, as well as off-road tires.

The Toyota concept pickup truck with a low center of gravity received a side that can be folded at right angles in the horizontal plane — this solution, in particular, allows, if necessary, to carry large items comfortably.

The EPU has a two-row cabin that seats five passengers. The place of the steering wheel is occupied by a steering wheel; on the front panel there is a large display that combines both a virtual instrument panel and a touchscreen of the infotainment system. The panel for controlling the automatic transmission is also located here.

The company has not yet talked about whether this concept will form the basis of a serial new product for the brand. At the same time, rumors that Toyota is preparing a competitor to the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz appeared in the summer of 2022. Representatives of the brand's North American office previously hinted at the appearance of a model in the compact pickup segment.

It is worth noting that even if the “electric”, created on the basis of EPU, goes into production, it will probably be ahead of the “green” pickup based on the traditional Toyota Hilux truck. The corresponding Hilux Revo BEV concept was unveiled last year in Thailand.
