CAIRO, Oct. 26 Head of the Politburo of the ruling movement in the Gaza Strip Hamas Ismail Haniyeh highly appreciates the position of Russia and China in the UN Security Council and their veto of the US-proposed resolution, the movement said in a statement.
““The head of the Politburo highly appreciates the position of Russia and China in the Security Council and their disruption of the American resolution taking the side of the occupation (Israel — ed.),” Hamas said in a statement.
On Wednesday, Russia and China vetoed a US draft resolution on the situation around Israel and the Gaza Strip at the UN Security Council. The draft resolution stated that the UN Security Council «unequivocally rejects and condemns the horrendous terrorist attack carried out by Hamas and other terrorist groups that has occurred in Israel since October 7.»
At the same time, the UN Security Council did not accept the Russian draft resolution on the situation around Israel and the Gaza Strip calling for an immediate ceasefire — the document also took into account elements of the Brazilian draft that was not adopted last week. The project did not receive the required nine votes in favor out of 15. Four countries voted in favor, two voted against, and nine abstained.
The Russian draft resolution specifically called for an immediate, sustainable ceasefire and condemned the Hamas attack on October 7, as well as indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Gaza. The text called for the immediate lifting of the order for Gazans to move to the south of the strip. In addition, it contained a call to organize humanitarian pauses and corridors.
