MOSCOW, Oct. 28 Ukraine is now dying due to the fault of the United States, seeking to expand NATO and their sphere of influence, American economist and professor at Columbia University Jeffrey Sachs said during his video speech.
He recalled that the roots of the current conflict in Ukraine lie in the moment when the United States, after the collapse of the USSR, decided to “push” the idea of NATO expansion and systematically implemented it.
In 2008, then-US President George W. Bush crossed an important “red line” for Russia, promising to one way or another accept Georgia and Ukraine into the alliance, while European leaders then understood , that this is a very dangerous step.
«It turned out to be disastrous for both of these countries. As Henry Kissinger said: “It may be dangerous to be an enemy of America, but to be a friend of America is fatal.” This is exactly what Ukrainian case: the country is dying right now due to the fault of the United States because of the desire for an impossible goal — joining NATO,» Sachs said.
He added that Ukraine is now «dying on the battlefield» for something that it «never could will be able to achieve» and what Russia will not allow.
As President Vladimir Putin previously noted, Ukraine’s non-aligned status is extremely important to Russia; the expansion of NATO at the expense of this country creates threats. The escalation of the current conflict was led, among other things, by the fact that Washington began to drag Kyiv into the alliance, he pointed out. The Russian leader added that Moscow has done everything to follow the path of resolving the conflict.
