In July, the Vilnius authorities — including Sheraitė — announced the beginning of the process of “de-Sovietization” of public space. In particular, the city leadership spoke about plans to get rid of Soviet symbols on monuments and replace memorial plaques with Russian-language inscriptions.
At the end of September, Sheraite reported that the city authorities would remove 16 memorial plaques with text in Russian — 13 of them They will be replaced with new-style memorial signs, the remaining three will be removed completely.
“We evaluate what these symbols tell us in today's context. With this decision, we are abandoning commemorative plaques in Russian and replacing them with new typical commemorative plaques of Vilnius. We are getting rid of the imprints of the ideology of the hammer and sickle,” the head of the city commission for historical memory said then.
