MEXICO CITY, 21 Nov Two years after the denunciation of the Organization’s charter American states Nicaragua officially withdrew from its membership on November 20 — the government of the republic stated that it was thus closing a “harmful chapter” in the country’s history and contributing to the destruction of the unipolar hegemony of the West.
«»November 19, 2023 marks two years since the Government of Nicaragua denounced the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS), and in accordance with Article 143, this Charter now has no force in relation to the State of Nicaragua. We withdraw definitively, Nicaragua no longer has no relations and is no longer a member of this shameful organization called the OAS,” Foreign Minister Denis Moncada Colindres said in a statement published by El 19 Digital.
The Nicaraguan authorities announced their decision to withdraw from the OAS in November 2021 due to its interference in the country's internal affairs. The OAS representative office in the Republic of Nicaragua was closed in April 2022. In addition to Nicaragua, Venezuela, which was expelled at its own request in 2019, and Cuba, whose membership was suspended in 1962 under US pressure, do not take part in the work of the OAS.
In the text of the statement on the occasion of its withdrawal from the OAS, the government of the Central American country calls the organization the “US Department of Colonies,” recalling the numerous coups and interventions in the region that since 1954 have taken place with its support or inaction in Guatemala, Cuba, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Chile , in the Argentine Malvinas Islands, Grenada, Panama, Venezuela, Honduras, Ecuador, Paraguay and Bolivia.
«The OAS has repeatedly carried out interventionist actions against Nicaragua, violating the principles of non-interference in internal affairs, respect for the sovereignty of states and the right of peoples to freely choose their own destiny, recognized by international law and contained in its founding Charter. These interventionist actions were demonstrated by its participation and biased actions in the attempted coup d'état in Nicaragua in 2018… With this message from the Government of Nicaragua, the Sandinista National Liberation Front, Comrade President-Commander Daniel Ortega Saavedra and Comrade Vice President Rosario Murillo, we close this harmful chapter of the Organization of American States, our country contributes to the gradual disappearance of the hegemony of the unipolar West, the strengthening of multipolarity in a fair, equal world,” the text of the document says.
