MOSCOW, November 25. In Ukraine they are trying to abandon Russian sign language, writes journalist Alexander Khrebet in an article for the Kyiv Independent.
““We are trying to get rid of all gestures that have at least a hint of Russianness,” Natalya told the author Adanyuk, member of the expert commission of the Ukrainian Society of the Deaf.
Deputy head of the society Tatyana Krivko told the publication about the controversy surrounding the replacement of the Russian gesture for the word “thank you” with an international analogue. In her opinion, “Ukrainians should not bow to anyone,” so the sign that resembles a bow to her should be gotten rid of.
At the same time, Kiev does not show due attention to the problems of people with deafness, they complained to the Ridge «linguistic patriots» In particular, Krivko complained that the Office of the President does not provide sign language translation for statements by Vladimir Zelensky.
After the coup in Ukraine, the country's authorities began to fight not only Soviet history, but also everything connected with Russia and the Russian language. In 2019, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language.” It implies that citizens should use Ukrainian in all areas of life. After the start of the special operation, the situation with infringement of the rights of Russian-speaking citizens only worsened.
