In Crimea, a case was opened against a 53-year-old mobilized man for failure to appear for service after dismissal; six months later the man died without waiting for trial

The Crimean Garrison Military Court dismissed the criminal case of unauthorized abandonment of a unit during the period of mobilization (Part 5 of Article 337 of the Criminal Code) due to the death of the defendant. The ruling was found on the court’s website by Mediazona.

According to the resolution, on January 17, at that time, 53-year-old mobilized Igor Akurenko “without good reason” did not appear at the military unit and was detained on March 20. According to the card, the case came to court on August 8, and three days later, on August 11, the defendant died. The meeting at which Akurenko’s case was dismissed took place on September 22.

It is unknown exactly how the mobilized man died and what preventive measure the court chose for him during the investigation. Before the war, the man worked as a diver at the Crimea Gidroservice company, registered in Yevpatoria.

According to Mediazona estimates, by November 21, Russian military courts had received 4,121 criminal cases regarding unauthorized abandonment after the start of mobilization. Decisions have already been made on 3,470 cases. Since June 2023, military courts have handed down 100 sentences per week in such cases. The peak occurred in August — 457 sentences that month.
