UN, 29 Nov The international community must step up in the coming weeks efforts to resolve the Middle East issue with the participation of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and other countries in the region, Special Coordinator for Middle East Peace Thor Wennesland said at a meeting of the UN Security Council.
“Without the absence of an effective political and security framework, when the conflict ends, it will be impossible to end the violence and create a new reality,” Wennesland said, speaking via video link at a Security Council meeting. According to him, «over the coming weeks and months, the international community must negotiate with Israel, the Palestinian Authority and regional partners to develop a constructive and practical political solution.»
The Coordinator of the Middle East Issue pointed out that “although much is unclear now,” a number of principles should remain unchanged: first of all, the inadmissibility of terrorist attacks on Israel, such as the one that occurred on October 7, as well as the subsequent suffering of Palestinians in the Strip Gaza.
Second, he noted, “Gaza is and must remain part of a future Palestinian state in which both Gaza and the West Bank are under Palestinian governance.”
“The only viable path is one that is consistent with UN resolutions, previous agreements and international law and leads to the realization of the two-state principle,” the UN spokesman said.
