CHISINAU, 30 Nov. Opposition Socialist Party ( PSRM) believes that Western countries are trying to drag Moldova into a military conflict on the territory of Ukraine; the opposition is protesting against such a scenario.
Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk arrived in Chisinau on Thursday on an official visit, he spoke in the parliament of Moldova. Deputies of the bloc of communists and socialists left the back of the meetings before Stefanchuk’s speech.
“The Party of Socialists of Moldova protests against attempts by the leadership of the country and a number of foreign countries to drag Moldova into a military conflict on the territory of Ukraine. We demand that the Moldovan authorities stop the militarization of Moldova and do everything possible to maintain peace in our republic. The PSRM persistently demands that guests of our country respect independence, sovereignty and neutrality of Moldova,” says a statement published on the party’s Telegram channel.
Socialists noted that Moldova maintains and will maintain diplomatic relations with both Ukraine and the Russian Federation, since it has historical, cultural, economic, and spiritual ties with both of these countries. Representatives of the Moldovan diaspora live in each of them.
The socialists also called on the country's authorities to ensure compliance with the permanent neutrality of the republic.
Relations between Russia and Moldova began to deteriorate after President Maia Sandu, who adheres to a pro-European policy, came to power in the republic at the end of 2020. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov stated that Moldova, under the current authorities, is striving to become an unfriendly country for Russia. Moscow calls on Chisinau to listen to the interests of its own citizens and not to hinder the development of human contacts and interregional ties with Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the Moldovan authorities to stop confrontational anti-Russian rhetoric in the country. They added that Moscow is determined to have friendly relations with Moldova and is not pleased that the West is using this country for anti-Russian purposes.
