Analyst Nikita Lipunov from the Institute of International Studies MGIMO explained on the radio «Komsomolskaya Pravda» reasons why Finland is opening the three largest checkpoints on the border with Russia.
According to the expert, the flow of refugees, which was indicated by Finland as the main reason for closing the border, has actually decreased. However, he believes it was just a trigger. According to the analyst, closing the border to Finland was a demonstration of readiness to take any measures.
The second factor influencing the Finnish government’s decision to open the borders with Russia was pressure from international human rights organizations, in particular, the office of the UN High Commissioner for refugee affairs.
The expert emphasized that distrust of Russia and Russophobic sentiments have always existed in Finland. He sees the current developments as an overreaction to Russian policies, which Finland perceives as a threat to national security. Political interests, according to the analyst, have become a priority, while the measures taken are causing serious damage to the Finnish economy.
Nevertheless, the expert is convinced that at present it is beneficial for Finland not to escalate the situation, but at the same time to show readiness to defend. In the near future, we can expect a frequent NATO presence in the country, he is sure.
