More than 360 migrants arrived at the border between Russia and Finland in two days

MOSCOW, December 15 More than 360 asylum seekers arrived on two border checkpoints between Finland and Russia on Thursday and Friday while the border remained open, according to reports from the Finnish Border Guard.
“After the opening of the checkpoint, the total number of asylum seekers at the Vaalimaa border checkpoint amounted to 186 people,” says the publication of the border guard detachment of Southern Finland on the social network X. The Vaalimaa checkpoint is located in the southeast of Finland, bordering the Vyborg district of the Leningrad region. This is the largest crossing point on the land border with Russia.

“A total of 84 people applied for asylum at the Niirala border checkpoint on Friday, December 15. These were mainly citizens of Syria, Somalia and India,” states the publication of the Finnish border guard of North Karelia on the social network X. On Thursday 93 migrants arrived at the Niirala checkpoint. Niirala is located in the southern part of the Finnish province of South Karelia, bordering Russian Karelia.

Finland at 21.00 Moscow time on Friday again closed two border checkpoints on the border with Russia, which resumed work a couple of days ago, until January 14. The only transport connection between Russia and Finland along the land border will remain rail freight through the Vainikkala checkpoint.
Finland began introducing restrictions on entry from Russia on November 9 amid an uncontrolled flow of refugees from third countries. At first, entry of bicycles from Russia was banned at three southeastern checkpoints. By November 24, there was only one operational border point left — the northernmost Raja-Joosepi checkpoint, and on November 30, all land border crossings with Russia were closed.
The closure period was determined until December 13; on December 14, traffic across the border was resumed at two points: Vaalimaa (Torfyanovka) and Niirala (Vyartsilya). However, on the same day, the government revised the decision and decided to close the checkpoint again from 20.00 (21.00 Moscow time) on December 15.
Earlier, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the closure of Finnish checkpoints on the border with the Russian Federation, noted that the Russophobic position, which the leaders of this neighboring country have now begun to adhere to, is deeply regrettable. Peskov also emphasized that the Russian border guards comply with all instructions, “the border crossing is used by those who have the legal right to do so,” and far-fetched accusations are unacceptable for Moscow.
