Rosptitsesoyuz told how many eggs Russians will eat in 2023

MOSCOW, December 18The production and consumption of eggs in Russia this year will remain at the level of last year — 46.1 billion pieces and 42.1 billion pieces, respectively, that is, production should cover the country’s domestic needs for food eggs by 9.5%, calculated based on Rosstat data and the forecast of the Russian Poultry Union.
““We will produce eggs this year at the level of last year. Egg consumption in the country at the end of the year is expected to be 288 eggs per capita per year,” said the director of the Rosptitsesoyuz, Galina Bobyleva.

In general, egg consumption in Russia has been relatively stable in recent years: for example, in 2010 it was 270 pieces per capita, in 2017 — 279 pieces, in 2019 and 2022 — 288 pieces per capita person, this industry union previously reported. Its statistics take into account consumption, including by the food industry.

According to Rosstat, as of January 1, 2023, 146.447 million people lived in Russia, excluding new regions. Thus, the total consumption of edible eggs in the country at the end of the year may amount to 42.117 billion pieces.
At the end of last year, 46.1 billion eggs were received in Russia — 2.7% more than in 2021 (this Rosstat statistics also does not yet take into account new regions). Based on the forecast of the Rosptitsesoyuz, it turns out that egg production exceeds domestic consumption by approximately 9.5%, as calculated. However, billions more eggs are needed for incubation — as Rosptitsesoyuz previously announced, about 10% of production is spent on this.
Chicken eggs in the Russian Federation have risen in price by 46% since the beginning of the year, the weekly growth rate has not yet slowed down: plus 4.55% from December 5 to 11 (there are no more recent Rosstat data yet). President Vladimir Putin, answering a question on Thursday about the situation with the price of eggs and chicken meat, explained the rise in prices, among other things, by the fact that imports were not opened on time. The government has already taken measures — from January 1, the import duty on eggs in the amount of up to 1.2 billion pieces will be zeroed out.
Minister of Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev expressed hope that after the New Year, prices for chicken eggs in Russia will begin to decline. In addition to imports, he named other measures taken — the authorities have improved support measures for egg and poultry producers and are encouraging the conclusion of direct contracts with retail chains.
