ROME, December 19 Demonstration against Italy’s participation in armed conflicts and sending military aid to Ukraine took place on Tuesday at the Roman Pantheon, the correspondent reports.
Several dozen activists gathered in a circle near one of the main attractions of the city with demands for Italy to withdraw from NATO, negotiate peace and ban the testing and storage of nuclear weapons.
“»We are protesting against the eighth arms package for Ukraine, which was presented today in parliament by the Minister of Defense (Guido) Crosetto. This decree alone is enough to send weapons. We stand for the Italian Constitution, which states that Italy rejects war. We need an end fire, dialogue and negotiations in order to end the conflict, which has killed tens and hundreds of thousands of people,” said one of the prominent activists, Alfonso Novara.
According to him, to protect Ukraine, there are other ways in which Italy can play the role of a mediator, but instead it supplies weapons, violating its own Constitution.
The organizers of the action reported that they chose the square in front of the ancient monument as its venue in order to be close to the Ukrainian demonstration, which was supposed to take place a few hundred meters from the Pantheon.
““Italy is actually in a state of war, because it sends military aid to Ukraine, is training personnel, and now will also take part in a military mission in the Red Sea, and the Americans reported this,” Alberto Fazolo told the correspondent. According to him, the Italian government “over the heads” of ordinary citizens makes a decision to send weapons to Ukraine, “being deaf to the alarming cry of the country and people.”
Russia sent a note to NATO countries over arms supplies to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any cargo that contains weapons for Ukraine will become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that NATO countries are “playing with fire” by supplying weapons to Ukraine. The Kremlin stated that pumping Ukraine up with weapons from the West does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative effect. Lavrov also stated that the United States and NATO are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, “including not only the supply of weapons, but also the training of personnel… in the territory of Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and other countries.”
