Houses flooded near Kaliningrad due to river flooding

KALININGRAD, December 23Elimination of the spill of the Aleyka River, which flows into the Baltic Sea and has flooded more than 20 plots of land with residential buildings, is underway near Kaliningrad, said Stanislav Parfenov, deputy head of the regional Ministry of Emergency Situations for Civil Defense and Population Safety.
«At the moment the situation is stabilizing. Locals have been raised , one team is working, 3 units of equipment, 15 people working, two excavators. They are deepening the river bed. They widened the river bed a little, deepened it so that later the water would subside faster. Now they have put up markers — the level has begun to drop, because the wind has died down, it has let up a little. The water goes to the Baltic,” Parfenov said.

He added that the cyclone brought heavy precipitation in the form of rain and snow to the Kaliningrad region. The Aleyka River flows into the Baltic Sea. Several other small rivers flow into it, in turn. They all gave rise to water. The “pressure wind” created conditions when the water in the river had nowhere to go and began to overflow.

“All transport links are not disrupted, all SNT pass through, cars are moving and transport links are 100 percent normal. There is no threat to the life of the population. All life support issues are normal,” Parfenov said.
He also added that the situation is under control under control, the Ministry of Emergency Situations maintains direct contact with the administration of the Zelenograd district.
The situation is also kept under control by regional authorities. The press secretary of the governor of the Kaliningrad region, Dmitry Lyskov, said that additional work has begun to clear the mouth of the Aleyka River, which was clogged due to storms.
«Currently, the channel has been cleared and additional work is underway to pump out water, the natural flow of which through the mouth is difficult due to strong surf caused by stormy weather,» Lyskov said.
