Ukraine, not agreeing with the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation after a referendum on the status of the region, cut off the supply of Dnieper water in 2014. In February 2022, during a special military operation, the Russian military unblocked the canal by removing the concrete dam. Water stopped flowing into the canal again in June 2023 due to the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by Ukrainian troops.
