The Sakhalin Regional Court sentenced a 43-year-old local resident to 15 years in prison in the case of treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code) and preparation of sabotage (Part 1 of Article 30; Part 1 of Article 281 of the Criminal Code). RIA Novosti reports this with reference to the press service of the regional FSB Directorate.
As the department clarified, the man will spend the first three years of his sentence in prison, and the remaining term in a maximum security colony. According to the case file on the court’s website, the verdict in the case, which included the same articles, was handed down on December 20. The name of the accused is not indicated.
According to the FSB, the Sakhalin resident, “acting under the leadership of the Ukrainian special services, carried out sabotage preparations at the facility of the island’s fuel and energy system.”
The security forces claim that during the search The 43-year-old man was found with instructions for making explosives, “a large amount of terrorist and extremist content,” as well as correspondence with “the coordinator of one of the terrorist organizations in Ukraine.”
The Sakhalin resident’s case came to court in early August. A month earlier, it became known that a resident of the island of the same year of birth had been detained. He was charged with the same things. Initially, the man was charged with preparation for a terrorist attack (Part 1 of Article 30; Part 1 of Article 205 of the Criminal Code) and treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code).
In the summer, the FSB published a video of the detainee. “I thought I would ride my bike at night to avoid being caught on camera. <…> I wanted to photograph all this (the terrorist attack on the thermal power plant — Ministry of Health) and later send it directly to the SBU,” the detainee said in the video published by the security forces.
