Another Chinese brand in Russia: VGV crossovers from the Sinotruk passenger division

VGV’s debut models in our market will be two mid-size crossovers, which should have very attractive price tags compared to their competitors.

VGV is the former Weichai (Chongqing) Automotive company, part of the Chinese state-owned industrial holding Weichai Group. In 2013, Weichai (Chongqing) Automotive launched the Enranger passenger car brand, but it did not gain success in the market. In 2019, it was replaced by the VGV brand, and in 2020, as a result of the redistribution of state assets, the VGV brand became part of the Sinotruk Group, a large Chinese manufacturer of heavy vehicles. trucks and other commercial vehicles. VGV is still responsible for passenger cars, but for now it is an outsider in the Chinese market: according to CAAM (Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers), from January to November this year, VGV sales in China amounted to only 4,907 vehicles (-22.4% compared to last year) — It’s no wonder that VGV is looking for new sales markets, and Russia just today hospitably welcomes all Chinese brands without exception.

Motor Place LLC has become the distributor of VGV in Russia, a dealer network is now being formed, sales will begin in 2024. The Russian distributor deciphers the abbreviation VGV as Very Good Vehicle, which translated into Russian means “very good car.” Meanwhile, there are alternative interpretations — for example, Victory Go Victory, which can be translated as “victory after victory” or “win, come on, win,” that is, even more pathetic.

Two mid-size VGV crossovers have been officially announced in Russia, but their names have not been announced; on the Russian website of the Chinese brand they are still covered with a cloth — they say that the official premiere is still ahead. Meanwhile, it is not difficult to figure out the mysterious new product, since the current VGV model range is very meager, there are only three platform models — two crossovers and a pickup truck. Accordingly, the crossovers known in China as VGV U70 Pro and VGV U75 Plus will come to us first (names may be different in Russia).

VGV U70 Pro and VGV U75 Plus have the same dimensions (length — 4825 mm, width — 1870 mm, height — 1691 mm, wheelbase — 2800 mm), but differ in design and equipment: the U75 Plus is more recent and expensive, in addition it has a seven-seater interior, while the U70 Pro has five seats. Both crossovers have only front-wheel drive, but the rear suspension is independent multi-link.

The VGV U70 Pro in China is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline turbo engine (156 hp, 215 Nm) paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed hydromechanical automatic transmission. The VGV U75 Plus crossover is equipped with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo engine (224 hp, 385 Nm) paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The interior design of crossovers is as unified as possible, but the VGV U75 Plus has a larger multimedia screen and an automatic transmission selector puck instead of a traditional lever.

The Russian distributor claims that both crossovers have undergone comprehensive adaptation for the climate of our country — we are waiting for the premiere and details. Prices are promised to be very aggressive in relation to competitors and very friendly towards consumers — we will also look and compare. The two debut models will be followed by others, including new crossovers, large SUVs, pickup trucks and commercial vans. Apparently, Sinotruk has big plans for the VGV brand, and Russia is now part of these plans.
