TOKYO, Jan 2 The Japan Meteorological Agency has lifted warnings for everything on the country's west coast about the possibility of a tsunami after a series of powerful earthquakes shook Ishikawa Prefecture the day before.
Currently, on the map published on the weather agency's website, the line of the western coast of Japan is colored blue, which means that there is a possibility of some change in the water level along the coastline. Warnings at various levels in all regions have been lifted.
On Monday afternoon, a series of powerful earthquakes occurred in the Japanese Ishikawa Prefecture. They were given the name «Earthquake on the Noto Peninsula». The first tremors of magnitude 5.7 were recorded at 16.06 local time (10.06 Moscow time). The second, a more powerful impact with a magnitude of 7.6, occurred at 16.10 local time (10.10 Moscow time). Another eight minutes later, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred.
According to meteorologists, by midnight on Tuesday, January 2 local time (18.00 Moscow time Monday), 87 repeated tremors with a force above two on the Japanese scale were recorded in the region. Seismologists previously warned of the possibility of strong aftershocks within about a week.
After the earthquakes, some regions on the west coast of Japan were threatened with a large tsunami.
At least eight people died, the number of victims is in the dozens. The tremors led to the destruction of houses and a halt in the movement of high-speed trains, cutting off electricity to more than 32 thousand houses. In some regions there is a blackout of water supply and communications. Damage to the road surface was recorded. No failures in the operation of the nuclear power plant were detected.
The earthquake of January 1, 2024 was the most powerful for the Noto Peninsula region since 1885, when such statistics began to be kept.
