On October 5, the Naryn City Court sentenced Beknazar Borugul uulu to five years in prison due to his participation in the war in Ukraine on the side of Russia. The verdict was published on the court's website. The Naryn Regional Court upheld this decision on December 7, Radio Azattyk reported.
The detention of the 27-year-old former mercenary became known in August 2023. His wife said that her husband went to work in Russia, ended up in a prison colony on charges of drug trafficking, and was recruited to fight in the war. In July he returned to Kyrgyzstan and was soon detained.
“After his return from Russia, we bought a car with all the money we had. But when the husband was detained, GKNB< /span>seized the car too,” the woman said. She added that she hopes for “the support of the Russian authorities.”
Radio Azattyk notes that the case of Beknazar Borugul uulu is the second case of detention of Kyrgyz citizens for participation in the war in Ukraine. In May, 31-year-old Askar Kubanychbek uulu received a ten-year sentence on charges of mercenaryism, but the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan later sent the case back for a new trial.
