MOSCOW, January 10 European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton said that Europe will remain “on its own” if Donald Trump is elected US President, Politico reports.
Earlier, Breton proposed creating an EU defense fund of 100 billion euros to increase arms production in the union.
«He (Trump — ed.) can come back. So now, more than ever, we realize that we are on our own, of course. We are members of NATO, almost all of them. Of course, we have allies, but we have no choice but to significantly increase these figures and be ready no matter what happens,» Breton said.
At the same time, he recalled that as President of the United States, Trump warned the EU in 2020 that the United States would not come to the aid of Europe if it was subjected to a military attack.
“You must understand that if Europe comes under attack, we will never come to help you and support you,” Trump told the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Breton recalls.
The US presidential elections are scheduled for November 5, 2024. Polls show Trump as the clear favorite in the Republican primary. He is expected to be opposed by the current US President Biden. According to polls, Trump is quite capable of winning in 2024.
