French startup NamX announced new details about its hydrogen crossover HUV: it turns out that hydrogen will be used as fuel for 6. With a 2-liter V8, the crossover will be as pleasant to drive as classic American muscle cars, but there will be no harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
While GM and Stellantis have already ditched their V8-powered muscle cars, French company NamX intends to revive their spirit in its HUV crossover. The presentation of the NamX HUV project took place back in 2022, but then the French company did not say anything about its power plant — the emphasis in the presentation was on the design and unusual hydrogen storage system: the crossover has one stationary cylinder and six additional replaceable cylinder cartridges, which are stored in the rear under the trunk floor, access to them is provided by a separate transparent door.

Replaceable cylinder cartridges are a kind of alternative to traditional hydrogen refills, of which there are still very few in the world: such refills are expensive and require a high degree of “foolproof”, since hydrogen is highly flammable and has high penetrating power (in other words, the risk of leaks is very high). In turn, cartridge cylinders can be produced centrally and delivered either directly to customers or to special warehouse terminals the size of a bus stop — such terminals can be located anywhere.
Usually, by hydrogen cars we mean electric cars with an on-board electrochemical generator, but in recent years the topic of hydrogen internal combustion engines has revived and begun to develop; several companies are currently developing them, including Ford, Keyou, Punch, Toyota and Yamaha. Hydrogen internal combustion engines make it possible to achieve the coveted environmental friendliness without heavy, expensive batteries and electric motors, as well as preserve existing engine factories, jobs and supply chains — it is only necessary that hydrogen be publicly available, which, unfortunately, we are not seeing yet.

The NamX HUV will use a 6.2-liter hydrogen V8, the origin of which is not revealed (readers are guessing that it was developed by the French company Solution F). On the basic GT version of the NamX HUV crossover, the hydrogen V8 will produce 300 hp. and will provide acceleration to 100 km/h in 6.5, on the GTH version the power is increased to 550 hp, and the acceleration time to “hundreds” is reduced to 4.3 s. There is no information about the gearbox and transmission yet; the range on one fill for both versions is 800 km.
NamX HUV GT will cost from 75,000 euros, NamX HUV GTH — from 95,000 euros, pre-orders are being accepted on the company’s website (a deposit of 1,000 euros is required for registration), the hydrogen crossover will hit the market only at the end of 2026 .

The design of the NamX HUV was developed by the legendary Italian studio Pininfarina: the letter X in the crossover is a style-forming one, it is clearly visible in the design of the front , stern and sides. Inside, X-shaped strokes also define the shape of the main panels; triangular instrument panels look quite original.

We hope that NamX will be able to bring its hydrogen crossover to mass production — a hydrogen V8, as you can understand from her videos on YouTube, it sounds very thoroughbred, old-school, petrolheads should be happy — after all, a world with hydrogen V8s is better than a world without a V8 at all.
