MOSCOW, January 17 .A power unit with a fast neutron nuclear reactor BN-1200M, the first among such commercial installations necessary for the development of domestic nuclear energy, is scheduled to begin construction at the Beloyarsk NPP in 2027, said the director of this nuclear plant, Ivan Sidorov.
“According to the road map, it is planned that the first concrete will be poured into the foundation in 2027,” Sidorov said in an interview with the BNPP corporate newspaper “Bystry Neutron”.
According to him, work on the future power unit No. 5 of the Beloyarsk NPP with the BN-1200M reactor is progressing according to schedule. “The site for the new unit has already been determined, public hearings on placement have been held. In accordance with the program, we are doing engineering surveys and drilling wells for them,” noted the station director.

Rosatom State Corporation is mastering technologies for the transition to a competitive two-component energy system based on a closed nuclear fuel cycle (CNFC). The point is to “combine” the operation of traditional VVER thermal neutron power reactors with fast neutron reactors.

Thanks to fast neutron reactors in the CNFC, the reproduction of nuclear fuel, plutonium, will expand, and the fuel base of nuclear energy will significantly increase, eliminating the need to mine natural uranium in large volumes. It will also be possible to reduce the amount and biological danger of radioactive waste remaining after the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) – the most dangerous radionuclides (the so-called minor actinides) are planned to be “burned out” in fast neutron reactors. In this way, it will be possible, as nuclear scientists figuratively say, to “remove two key thorns” of the current nuclear energy industry, related to the limited reserves of natural uranium and the deferred problem of spent nuclear fuel.

Currently, the basic technologies of the CNFC in Russia are being tested during the operation of the energy complex of the Beloyarsk NPP (power units No. 3 and 4 with “fast” reactors BN-600 and BN-800 with liquid metal coolant, sodium) in combination with existing and created production facilities for the production of nuclear fuel. fuel, spent nuclear fuel reprocessing and SNF and radioactive waste management.
A further development of the technology of “fast” sodium reactors was the development, within the framework of the industry project “Breakthrough,” of a high-power commercial power unit with a capacity of 1,200 MW. In 2016, the technical design of the reactor plant was completed. Then the experts determined how the technical and economic indicators of the new power unit could be improved, and the development of a project for the modernized BN-1200M reactor plant began, which should be competitive in comparison with advanced high-power nuclear power units with thermal neutron reactors, as well as alternative generation. In 2018, technical specifications for the BN-1200M were approved, then research and development work was carried out to substantiate technical solutions, safety, and competitiveness of the new power unit.

The construction of a new power unit of the Beloyarsk NPP with the BN-1200M reactor is provided for by the general layout of electric power facilities in the Russian Federation until 2035.
