ULAN-UDE, January 18 The Supreme Court of Buryatia changed the suspended sentence to a real one for those convicted in a criminal case regarding the death of five employees of the Selenginsky Pulp and Cardboard Mill (CPM), reported on the court's website.
In 2022, hydrogen sulfide accumulated in one of the treatment tanks containing production wastewater at the plant, which poisoned five workers to death. Another woman was able to get out of the danger zone on her own; doctors saved her life.
In September 2023, four representatives of the management of the Selenga Central Control Commission were found guilty of violating labor safety standards and rules for the release of pollutants.
The court sentenced them to two to three years of suspended imprisonment with deprivation of the right to work in positions related to the control of safe working conditions. The prosecutor's office considered the punishment too lenient and filed an appeal: the state prosecutor demanded that the suspended sentences be revoked and the perpetrators sent to a correctional colony.
«By the appeal ruling of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Buryatia dated January 18, 2024, the sentence was changed, the imposition of a suspended sentence on the convicts was excluded, and the sentence was ordered to be served in reality — in a colony settlement,» the message says.
For a convict with small children, the sentence was deferred until the youngest child turns 14 years old.
