MOSCOW, January 22A container ship for cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route is planned to be built in the interests of a joint venture between Rosatom and the UAE's DP World, the project is being implemented and is moving on to contracting the design of the vessel, said Vladimir Panov, special representative of the Russian nuclear state corporation for Arctic development.
In the fall of 2023, Rosatom and DP World created a joint venture, International Container Logistics, to develop transit container transportation along the Northern Sea Route. It was reported that at the pilot stage, this joint venture is expected to provide an annual traffic volume of up to 800 thousand TEU (symbol for a 20-foot container). Rosatom's subsidiary Rusatom Cargo owns 51% of the project, DP World — 49%. The authorized capital of the joint venture is 960 million rubles.
“This is a joint venture, the investors are Rosatom and DP World, and the task of which is to create container port facilities, between which, accordingly, a high-class Arctic vessel, a container ship, will sail,” Panov said.
“The study on the parameters of the vessel has been completed, it was a lot of work. Now we are moving on to contracting for the design of the vessel,” he added.
According to Panov, the cargo base for this project is clear. “We have preliminary agreements on loading this vessel,” the agency’s interlocutor noted.
In December 2023, Rosatom and DP World signed an agreement providing for the creation of a global logistics operator to operate in the Russian and international markets.
DP World (Dubai, UAE) is the world's leading provider of comprehensive digital transport and logistics services, providing trade transportation around the world. Rosatom is the infrastructure operator of the Northern Sea Route.
