MOSCOW, January 26 .The cost of raw materials for the production of pet food in the Russian Federation is not increasing and is even decreasing; the cost of these products is also influenced by other factors — among them, for example, prices for packaging and transportation, the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation reported.
The Russian division of the Swiss company Nestle, which produces pet food (among them Pro Plan, Purina One, Gourmet and Felix), warned partners about an increase in selling prices for these products from February 5, explaining the increase in the cost of production of dog and cat food by rising prices raw materials and ingredients, RBC reported earlier on Friday, citing copies of letters from Nestlé Purina PetCare. The company itself declined to comment on the request.
«»Producer prices for raw meat for the production of animal feed have recently shown stability. Thus, the cost of beef remained virtually unchanged over the month — an increase of 0.7%, while chicken meat and pork fell in price by 4% and 4.4% accordingly,” the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture reported. At the same time, they added, other factors also influence the cost of production, for example, in this list “the dynamics of packaging prices, electricity tariffs, and transportation.”
In turn, the Mars company in the Russian Federation (trademarks Whiskas, Perfect Fit, Kitekat, Chappi, Pedigree) reported that they felt an increase in prices for raw materials, but in 2023 they did not raise product prices. “We will carefully monitor changes in the market situation,” the press service said.
The Association of Retail Trade Companies (AKORT) says that the cost of pet food showed multidirectional dynamics last year, and by the end of the year began to systematically decline — for example, in November 2023 it decreased by 1.2%, according to EMISS data ( Unified Interdepartmental Information and Statistical System), and compared to the end of 2023, in January 2024 the cost of dry feed increased by 0.6%.
«The adjustment of producer prices is primarily affected by the volatility of exchange rates, as well as the rise in costs of logistics and the revision of logistics routes. Consumers of this category of goods, as a rule, focus on familiar brands and are very demanding about the quality of goods. Almost 60% Russians keep pets, and the demand for food is growing every year,” says Igor Karavaev, Chairman of the Presidium of AKORT.
