According to investigators, on the evening of January 31, near a house on Gaptsakhskaya Street in Makhachkala, a criminal shot 21-year-old Mutaev at least seven times. The athlete died from gunshot wounds on the way to the medical facility. A criminal case has been initiated under Part 1 of Art. 105 (murder) and part 2 of article 222 (illegal arms trafficking) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
Earlier, another source reported that Nadyrkhan Kadirkhanov, an 18-year-old native of the Dagestan village of Korkmaskala, was being sought on suspicion of murdering Mutaev.
