MOSCOW, February 3 US strikes on Iranian targets in Iraq and Syria could provoke further confrontation and involve new actors in it, said the head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, presidential candidate from the LDPR Leonid Slutsky.
“American strikes on Iranian targets in Iraq and Syria could provoke further confrontation, involve new actors in it and finally “blow up” the Middle East, where the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is still in an active phase. Not to mention the fact that the United States has again invaded territory of sovereign states,» Slutsky said.
According to him, Biden’s statements after the strikes on Iraq and Syria that “the United States is not looking for a conflict in the Middle East” are a mockery of common sense, all Washington’s actions indicate the opposite — the United States has made a conscious escalation in the region.
““The United States must stop its insane policy of fueling the Great War in the Middle East region and take the path of de-escalation,” Slutsky believes.
On Saturday night, the United States said it had hit more than 85 targets belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated forces in Iraq and Syria as part of retaliatory strikes against its military base in Jordan. The strikes were carried out around 16.00 Friday US East Coast time (00.00 Moscow time Saturday), the Pentagon central command reported. According to the US military, among the targets hit by US aircraft are command posts, intelligence centers, missile and drone storage facilities, as well as other facilities involved in ensuring the operation of ammunition supply chains for the IRGC and allied forces in Iraq and Syria.
The Syrian state TV channel Al Akhbar reported that as a result of US strikes on positions in the Syrian desert and on the border of Syria and Iraq, several people were killed. An Iraqi security source reported the death of one civilian and the injury of another as a result of a US strike in the Al-Qaim area in western Iraq.
