MOSCOW, February 4 Former world number one Russian Maria Sharapova named compatriot Mirra Andreeva a representative of a new promising generation of tennis players.
In January, 16-year-old Andreeva reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. Last season, the Russian woman reached the third round at Roland Garros, the fourth at Wimbledon, and the second at the US Open.
«»I love watching the next generation rise to the occasion. I was very impressed with the way American Cori Gauff won the US Open last year. It's also great to see new names and prospects emerging for athletes like Mirra Andreeva. Now we see much more stability in women's tennis, and this is really pleasing,” Sharapova said in an interview with Forbes.
Sharapova is 36 years old. She is the winner of five Grand Slam singles tournaments, silver medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, and winner of the 2008 Fed Cup as part of the Russian national team. Sharapova has lived in the USA since 1995.
