BMW i5 and 5 series Touring of the new generation: the five-door has grown in size and changed its image

The Bavarian brand station wagons will reach dealers in Germany, a number of other European countries and Japan in May 2024, and in other markets the models will appear in June.

BMW began producing the 5 series back in 1972; over the years, the model has changed generations several times. The presentation of the four-door version of the new generation model (G60 series) took place in May last year, at the same time the all-electric version debuted, which received its own name — BMW i5. The rechargeable hybrid “five” was presented in the fall. Now, after a series of teasers and camouflaged prototypes, the Bavarians have finally declassified the sixth generation BMW 5 series Touring station wagon and its “green” modification – the i5 Touring.

One of the main changes for the five-door was increased dimensions. In length, the new “five” stretched to 5060 mm (97 mm more than its predecessor), in width – up to 1900 mm (32 mm more), in height – up to 1515 mm (17 mm more). The distance between the axles has also increased: for the new station wagon it is 2995 mm, which is 20 mm more than that of the previous generation BMW 5 series Touring.

The increase in size was spent on interior space for passengers, while the luggage compartment volume remained the same: 570 liters, and with the rear seats folded down the figure rises to 1,700 liters. As standard, station wagons are offered 18- and 19-inch wheels, and 21-inch wheels are available for an additional fee.

The BMW 5 series Touring visually looks a little more aggressive compared to its predecessor; this effect is achieved due to more prominent stampings on the hood and sides, a different spoiler on the top of the tailgate, as well as other, more massive bumpers. The station wagon received new head optics of a modified shape with running lights in the form of “brackets”, as well as a slightly enlarged radiator grille in the form of branded “nostrils” with a pattern in the form of vertical stripes and with a silver edging. The rear lights also changed their shape and pattern.

In the all-green version of the BMW i5 Touring, the plug has the same shape as the traditional radiator grille, but it is made of black plastic with a thin chrome outline that does not touch the bridge between the “nostrils”. The electric train also has a differently designed front bumper, in which the air intakes are designed in the form of large elements made of glossy plastic. The stern differs due to the rear bumper with a different diffuser.

The interior of the new products is already familiar to fans of the brand, not only from the four-door “fives”, but also from other recent BMW models. On the front panel there is a curved display that combines a 12.3-inch diagonal virtual instrument panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen of the BMW OS 8.5 infotainment system. The interior features sports seats and a new steering wheel, “flattened” on both sides. A panoramic roof, leather interior trim and an 18-speaker sound system are optionally available.

At the start of sales, the new BMW 5 series Touring will be available with a mild-hybrid powertrain, which is based on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel with an output of 197 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. It is connected and works in tandem with a 48-volt electric booster and an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. Drive – rear or all-wheel drive.

The company noted that in the summer of 2024 the line will be replenished with a version with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine, as well as a pair of plug-in hybrids. Later, versions with other “fillings” may appear.

The BMW i5 Touring will be offered in two versions with a single traction battery with a capacity of 81.2 kWh. The eDrive40 has one 340-horsepower electric motor located on the rear axle, its maximum torque is 430 Nm. This station wagon needs 6.1 seconds to accelerate from zero to “hundreds”. Its range on a single charge is 560 km (calculated using the WLTP cycle).

The top version of BMW The i5 M60 xDrive Touring is equipped with a dual-motor setup (one electric motor on each axle). Its total output is 601 hp. (820 Nm). This version of the five-door reaches the first hundred in 3.9 seconds, and its top speed is 230 km/h. The maximum range without recharging is expectedly less than that of the starting version — the figure is 506 km.

Station wagons of the Bavarian brand will reach dealers in Germany, a number of other European countries and Japan in May of this year, and new items will appear in other markets in June. On the domestic market, a new generation diesel five-door costs at least 61,750 euros, for the initial version of the electric train they ask for at least 72,200 euros, and the price of the top-end version of the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring is 101,500 euros.
