Updated Ford Puma crossover: plus large screens, minus the most powerful version

The European bestseller Ford has hardly changed in appearance, but the interior has been redrawn. There are fewer versions, but the brand has promised to release an all-electric version.

A small Ford SUV with the revived Puma name debuted in 2019. The model was created on the Fiesta platform (this compact has already been retired), it is addressed mainly to the Old World. Europeans liked the crossover; at the end of last year, the five-door became the brand's bestseller in this region: almost 160,000 units were sold (the result for 2022 is about 137,000 units). For comparison, the Renault Captur then sold 145,000 copies across Europe. And now the time has come for restyling.

Externally, the Puma has changed little, apparently so as not to scare off buyers. Diode “touches” of running lights have appeared in the headlights; in addition, matrix head optics are now available for an additional fee for the SUV. The palette of body colors has been expanded with a new shade of Cactus Gray. The “charged” crossover Ford Puma ST, as before, has a slightly more aggressive body kit and exposed dual exhaust pipes. The length of the standard SUV is the same 4186 mm, the ST version is 4226 mm. Wheelbase – 2588 mm.

The interior, on the contrary, has been redrawn. Inside there is a new front panel, steering wheel and virtual instrument panel with a diagonal of 12.8 inches instead of 12.3 inches in the pre-reform model. The crossover also gained a fresh SYNC4 multimedia system with a 12-inch tablet instead of an 8-inch one, while the central air deflectors are now located above the touchscreen. There is no longer a separate climate control unit — the settings are built into the multimedia display. New equipment includes all-round cameras and a reverse braking assist system, plus improved adaptive cruise control. But there are fewer trim levels.

The European Ford Puma lost its diesel engines a long time ago; their return is not planned. Now the gasoline line has also been reduced: the top-end crossover Puma ST with a 200-horsepower 1.5 turbo engine and manual transmission has been removed. The restyled sports SUV was left with only the 1.0 EcoBoost turbocharged engine with a 48-volt starter-generator and a seven-speed Powershift robot with two clutches; this cross produces 170 hp. The standard “mild hybrid” Puma is equipped with a 1.0 EcoBoost with a power of 125 or 155 hp: in the first case, the cross is equipped with mechanics or a robot, in the second — only Powershift. The SUV comes exclusively with front-wheel drive.

At the same time, Ford announced a fully electric SUV: this version is named Puma Gen-E, the electric car will be declassified until the end current year. Well, an updated gasoline crossover in France, for example, costs from 27,490 euros, while the basic pre-reform Puma there will cost 26,500 euros.

Meanwhile, the restyled Ford Kuga crossover was previously presented in Europe.
