Lawyer: a Trans-Baikal resident accused of beating a Wagner PMC mercenary has lost his legs, the guards carry him into court in their arms

The health of Ivan Zyryanov, one of the defendants in the case of beating a Wagner PMC mercenary recruited from a colony, has seriously deteriorated in pre-trial detention center-2 of Krasnokamensk. His lawyer Alexander Zhdanov reported this to Mediazona.

The 43-year-old man’s legs and right arm have failed, which is why he cannot move independently, and the bailiffs of the Nerchinsko-Zavodsky District Court of the Trans-Baikal Territory are taking him away into the building, thrown over his shoulder.

Residents of the village of Nerchinsky Zavod filmed how Zyryanov was carried into the courthouse.

“Look, Vanya is feeling really bad, Lord,” says a woman’s voice-over.

According to the lawyer, the video was filmed before the meeting “this week.”

“ Today the convoy was already carrying him on a stretcher, not like a sack,” clarifies Alexander Zhdanov, telling Mediazona about the last court hearing, which took place on February 15. This week, witnesses for the prosecution and defense finished speaking, and the court moved on to the testimony of the defendants.

“Zyryanov answers the judge’s questions while sitting,” says Zhdanov.

He clarified that Zyryanov felt unwell at the end of last year, when he was in pre-trial detention center No. 1 in Chita — the prisoner suddenly fell. After the case of the beating of the Wagner PMC mercenary Mikhail Taskin was received by the Nerchinsko-Zavodskoy District Court, the five accused were transferred to pre-trial detention center No. 2 in Krasnokamensk, from where once a month they were transferred for a week to the temporary detention center in the village of Nerchinsk Zavod. Zyryanov had to call an ambulance there, says the lawyer.

“In the temporary detention center, a paramedic came to see him first — as a result of the optimization of medicine, apparently, it came to the point that a paramedic comes to the ambulance, not a doctor,” says Zhdanov. — He needed to have an MRI, but as far as I understand, there is no such machine at the Nerchinsky Plant. Therefore, he was taken to Krasnokamensk — they examined him there. They did an MRI of his head — according to the documents, no consequences of a stroke were found.”

At the same time, Zyryanov was not given an MRI of his spine, the defense lawyer says. Before his arrest, the man was diagnosed with pinched nerves by intervertebral discs, and “as a result of severe stress, his legs became paralyzed,” Zhdanov suggests.

“He goes to the toilet [in the temporary detention facility] in this way: he climbs off the side of the bed, falls on a bucket,” says Zhdanov.

He clarifies that the doctors give Zyryanov painkilling injections, but the sensitivity of the limbs does not return. Judge Svetlana Skubeva has already twice rejected the defense’s requests to transfer Zyryanov to house arrest.

Ivan Zyryanova and others four defendants in the case are accused of beating Mikhail Taskin, a Wagner PMC mercenary recruited from the colony. In 2020, he received nine years for trying to shoot three people over a dispute over a parking space. Taskin received a pardon for his participation in the war and returned home with an amputated leg.

As Kommersant writes with reference to the Trans-Baikal Investigative Committee, the investigation believes that on August 5, 2023, the accused Ivan Zyryanov and Sergei Piskarev “spoke negatively about the commissioned participants in the special operation.” The military decided to leave for another city, but, according to the investigation, the accused caught up with them in two cars. The car of the war participants was damaged, and one of the servicemen was beaten. SK insists that the awards “for participation in the SVO” were also torn from his chest.

At the same time, Regnum, with reference to residents of the Nerchinsk Plant, wrote that the conflict was provoked by Taskin himself. According to them, that day in a local cafe, the military man threw his crutch towards the waitresses and “ordered them to bring it back to him, and then threw it again.”

Despite this, the participants in the conflict were accused under articles about “discrediting” the army, resulting in harm to health and property (Part 2 of Article 280.3 of the Criminal Code), deliberate infliction of minor harmhealth on grounds of political hatred (clause “b” of part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code), as well as damage to property (part 1 of Article 167 of the Criminal Code).

Taskin’s sister insisted that her brother was beaten by opponents of the war. This version was also supported by Governor Alexander Osipov. State Duma Deputy Alexander Khinshtein demanded the dismissal of the security forces, who initially did not notice the “discredit” of the army in the fight.

At the same time, Regnum, with reference to villagers, said that the accused Zyryanov was never against the war. According to his brother Alexey, Zyryanov worked as an electrician at patriotic events, and also repaired cars for “the entire village, including the participants of the SVO.”

The brother also added that even before the conflict in a cafe, Zyryanov met Taskin near the market. He wanted to “take revenge for 9 years in prison” on the man he was unable to shoot in 2019. Taskin asked Zyryanov to “help, as he is being attacked,” but he refused.
