CHELYABINSK, February 16. Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with the governor of the Chelyabinsk region Alexei Texler, proposed closing part of the harmful production of the Chelyabinsk Electrometallurgical Plant (CHEMK) to improve the environmental situation in the city.
During the meeting, Texler told the head of state that this is a large metallurgical plant production, but no work was carried out to reduce emissions, and the prosecutor’s office is making claims to the plant’s owners for fulfilling their obligations.
“»I know this problem. This enterprise, a hazardous production, or rather, here in the city center, needs to be closed, moved outside the city,» Putin said to this.
He also stated that issues of preserving jobs after the relocation of the Chelyabinsk Electrometallurgical Plant and the integration of work at a new technological level must be worked out together with the Russian government. Putin also advised to attract investors to this.
Texler asked that these be local investors, the president agreed to this. “I fully support it,” Putin said.
The governor also asked Putin to transfer social facilities from the enterprise’s balance sheet to the city — a swimming pool and a historic shopping center building, which are supposed to be used for the needs of the townspeople.
““I think that all the property should become the property of the state, and some of these facilities — hazardous production, as we have now agreed, should be moved outside the city limits, and social facilities, of course, we will do so: we will transfer them to the ownership of the subject of the Federation,» the president agreed.
Texler called this an important decision for all Chelyabinsk residents and when asked by the president whether the authorities could find local investors who could take part in this common work, he answered positively.
