Scientists: locust invasion threatens food security around the world
Locusts are the main threat to global food security. Chinese and Singaporean scientists came to this conclusion. They indicate that due to global warming, the number of infestations of this insect has increased. They presented their findings in an article for Science Advances.
Increasing average temperatures and increasing humidity lead to the fact that locusts begin to breed in previously atypical areas. And this, in turn, worsens the situation where the invasion of these insects has always been a big problem — in South Asia and Africa. Scientists believe that the pest's habitat will continue to expand.
Experts note that locust attacks simultaneously on countries remote from each other have become more frequent. For example, India and Morocco. And they also see this as a bad sign. Since in this case, global crop failures and, as a result, food problems throughout the world may follow.
