ROSTOV-ON-DON, February 19 The Rostov regional court sentenced to six years in a penal colony the former judge of the Krasnodar regional court Yuri Zakharchevsky, accused of he ran over a cyclist in a jeep and disappeared, a correspondent reports from the courtroom.
Zakharchevsky was charged with Part 4 of Article 264 (violation of traffic rules resulting in the death of a person through negligence), Article 125 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (leaving in danger). During the debate, the prosecutor asked the court to sentence Zakharchevsky to 10 years in a general regime colony.
«Sentence Zakharchevsky six years in prison to be served in a penal colony,» the judge said.
As the investigation reported, in April 2020, Zakharchevsky hit a cyclist in an SUV and fled the scene of the accident. The cyclist died in hospital a few months later. The Qualification Board of Judges of the Kuban terminated Zakharchevsky’s powers, and the Higher Qualification Board of Judges of the Russian Federation allowed to initiate a criminal case against him.
The property of the defendant has been seized. Zakharchevsky will continue to be subject to a preventive measure in the form of a ban on certain actions until the sentence comes into force.
