MOSCOW, February 26 The Appeals Council has softened sanctions against the English football the Everton club, which was deducted 10 points for violating financial fair play, is reported on the website of the English Premier League (EPL).
In November 2023, an independent commission of the Premier League deducted 10 points from Everton in the current season of the English Championship due to a violation of financial fair play in the period before the 2021/22 season due to losses of 124.5 million pounds (almost 142 million euros), which is more than the permissible limit of 105 million (120 million euros). The club appealed this decision.
The Appeals Council decided to deprive the club of 6 points rather than 10. In this regard, Everton will get four points back. Sean Dyche's team will rise to 15th place following the decision with 25 points.
“We are satisfied that our appeal resulted in a reduction in the sanctions. We understand that the appeal board considered the original penalty of deprivation of 10 points to be unfair when compared with the existing indicators of which the club informed the commission. The club is also pleased with the decision «The appeal board overturned the panel's original finding that the club had acted insufficiently in good faith,» Everton said in a statement.
In the history of the Premier League, only two clubs have previously lost points in the standings. In 2010, Portsmouth was deducted 9 points for declaring bankruptcy and introducing external management into the club, after which the team was relegated. In the 1996/97 season, Middlesbrough were deprived of three points for failing to show up for a match with Blackburn Rovers.
